Okay,
Jim Rice is in the Hall of Fame, but Andre Dawson is not. Why? The answer is very simple. Jim Rice played in Boston, Dawson in Montreal, Chicago, (Boston for 1 season late in his career), and Florida. I read a collumn yesterday that said "Don't give me the numbers Jim Rice is a Hall of Famer". Basically saying, I don't really care what the numbers say, I grew in Boston and watched him so trust me he belongs.
"CRAP, ABSOLUTE CRAP". Hey, I grew up in Chicago, so trust me Mark Grace is a Hall of Famer no matter what the numbers say. Oh you can justify anything, but Dawson has more hits, more homers, more RBI's, a higher career average, more stolen bases, and the same number of world series rings (zero). Oh did I add that Dawson played all 3 outfield positions and only played 1 season in the AL where he could bat DH. That means that in a 15 year career he was dragging his taped knee out to the outfield. Add to that almost 3 times as many outfiled assists, and your arguement CAN'T be about numbers cause it would fall faster than the French army.
So basically we just have to take their word for it. He led a team that completely collapsed in '74 and '78, only had 1 post season appearence (albiet in the memorable '76 world series with the Reds) to Dawson's two.
See, this will be a similar arguement Red's fans will get to make when Jeter is put in ahead of, or at least considered greater than Larkin. Barry was the better hitter, fielder, and probably the better leader. Jeter just happened to play with some of the best pitchers and hitters of his era. It all comes back to money. Larkin decided to play his whole career in Cincinnati, and he'll be punished for it.
That brings us back to Dawson. Arguably one of the best all around players of his era. He's mentioned in the same breath as Bonds and Henderson (ironically). Sandberg acknowleded him as the best player on the Cubs. My prediction is he will get in, maybe next year. The shame is how long it will take him. And don't even get me started on Lee Smith.

This guy still bleeds Cub blue and should be in the hall of fame. Ron Santo is my alltime favorite Cub and always will be. He has gone through very tough times in his life and still overcame them. Well I think you're very close to the reasons, DAWSON played for teams that did nothing, and he played alot of years hurt that hindered what he was really capable of. Think about it - he was MR MONTREAL, on a team that had trouble winning a 3 inning game at cooperfield against a high school team. And the Canadian press was very seldom writing about athletes that carried a STICK that hit a ball and not a puck.
And I saw RICE play too, and I personnally think at his peek, he was one of maybe 10 players that were considered FEARED at the plate, and a great arm.
Dawson was the Fergie Jenkins of the OF, he should make the vote eventually
